Language Acquisition

Language and Communication can look different in a lot of ways, but the end result is always the same - the receiving and decoding of messages across two parties. All children start developing language from the day they’re born, often through relationships and play with other people. However, it can be harder for autistic children to learn and use language than it is for typically developing children.  Many of the factors that make children with autism unique can also lead to them not getting as many natural chances to develop their language skills as their peers.

What Does Language Acquisition do to Help?

The core part of Language Acquisition is not about how a client communicates (vocally, sign, PECS, AAC devices, etc), but how well they communicate in their identified way and how they understand and interpret the communication of others. With an understanding of the general stages of language acquisition and the unique way in which our clients learn, we can effectively teach and develop language acquisition skills for autistic children.
To help, we can break down the general stages of language acquisition:
1.
Pre-Production
2.
Early Production
3.
Speech Emergency
4.
Beginning Fluency
5.
Intermediate Fluency
6.
Advanced Fluency
Springtide looks at the whole child when developing their individual programming. For speech and language services, our therapists look at the general stages of language acquisition. We can then look at language acquisition from an interdisciplinary approach, working language acquisition and development into the client’s ABA and speech services.

Springtide's 360 Model

Language acquisition is, by nature, an interdisciplinary subject. Springtide’s 360 model lends itself to this by allowing Language Acquisition milestones to be considered in each child’s individual program. Our therapists, whether during ABA, Speech or other sessions, can collaborate under one roof to ensure that the necessary language skills are being developed alongside their other milestones.

Speech Therapy at Springtide

Many of the skills of Language Acquisition are taught with the help of our Speech Language Pathologists and can be a part of your child's Speech Therapy and/or ABA Therapy program. Our multidisciplinary, collaborative 360 approach allows us to work on any skills the individual needs to work on to promote the most success, both now and in the future.
