Social Skills

In our neurotypical world, children absorb many social skills from their environment. As such, our adult world tends to put harsh expectations on many social skills we deem to be ‘basic’, such as eye contact and body language. So many do not understand that individuals on the autism spectrum may not have the ability to simply ‘absorb’ these skills through imitation and observation, leading to disruptions and misunderstandings. Children with autism learn differently but when in the right environment with the right support they can learn these skills and develop the social skills they will need throughout their lives.

How Social Skills Can Be Taught

By breaking down the tasks and pieces of social interaction that many of us take for granted, social skills can be taught and developed in children on the spectrum.

Social Skills Development at Springtide

Social skills expand beyond communication and language.
Core to social skills is the understanding of others and the ability to respond to frequent changes in the environment. The difference between learning and memorizing is the ability to use learned skills in new situations. Springtide’s goal is to set our clients up for success both now and in the future, and that means instilling a core understanding of social situations that carries with them even after they graduate.

Our individualized programs take core social skills into account, not just how well they can imitate a ‘desired’ response in a specific situation. If a client is struggling in a certain area that may cause difficulty developing to more advanced skillsets, our therapists will identify and intervene to keep them on track with their program and family goals.

Our 360-Approach to Care

Social skills are among the most important and used skills for any person. They are not taught best on a blackboard or from a book, but rather through experience and interaction. Our 360 model lends itself perfectly to this truth, as multiple therapists can collaborate on a unified social skills program that seamlessly integrates into any sessions they have, while remaining fun in a true play-based stress-free environment at our Springtide centers.

Our unparalleled parent and client group support means we teach and give families, specialists, and teachers the tools to build on our clients’ development and sessions. A full 360 wrap around means no one, even a client’s home medical provider, is left out of the loop.
